Lee County Law Enforcement Honored at Event To Raise Funds for Local Agencies and Youth Programs
Rotary Club of Fort Myers South held its 4th annual Law & Order Ball in celebration of Lee County law enforcement officers on Saturday, October 21st at Germain Arena. Captain Christopher Reeves of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office was honored as “Officer of the Year”. This annual event raises funds to support local law enforcement youth programs, the Fort Myers Rotary South Foundation and the Fund-A-Need Initiative. Next year’s Law & Order Ball date has been set for September 15, 2018.
Captain Christopher Reeves has been with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office for 23 years. During his career there, he has been assigned the duties of Patrol Deputy, Property Crimes Detective, Major Crimes Detective, Narcotics Detective (C.L.E.A.N. and D.E.A. task forces), and also his present duties as the North District Commander. In 2000, Captain Reeves became involved with the North Fort Myers Jr. Football Association, starting as an assistant coach, moving to head coach. Around the same time, Captain Reeves also served on the association’s board and is currently the Vice President. Over the past 17 years, Captain Reeves has continued to teach his football players a philosophy of God, family, education, and community service. When Captain Reeves retires, he plans to continue his service to the youth of Lee County through his personal business that will provide athletic training at no cost.
Captain Reeves’ community service includes raising money through numerous activities for the Boys and Girls Club, United Way, and Lighthouse of SWFL Inc., raising money for over 50 scholarships for after-school youth activities, and hosting food drives for the homeless and the hungry, often donating his personal vacation home to help raise money for these causes.
The sold-out black-tie event is held to honor hometown heroes, who work daily to keep our communities safe. In addition to Captain Reeves, four other local law enforcement officers were named as finalists for the award:
- Deputy Jennifer Gaytan, Lee County Sheriff’s Office
- Corporal Bobby Hunter, Lee County Sherriff’s Office
- Sergeant Josh Quaintance, Lee County Sheriff’s Office
- Master Officer Melissa Duncan, Lee County Port Authority Police Department
Captain Reeves also received a custom Mark Loren Designs ring, by Rotarian Mark Loren.
For the 2017 Fund-A-Need initiative, Lee County Law Enforcement agencies identified several items that would assist in keeping the public and officers safe. Items like tactical helmets, shields, and body armor and vests, training mats, Driving Simulation training, Shooter Simulation training and AEDs (automated external defibrillator) were identified by the departments as areas of need. All funds raised for the Fund-A-Need to will go directly to the local law enforcement agencies.
